ATLANTA -- The Winship Cancer Institute of Emory Hospital is one of 14 facilities nationwide participating in the research.
"This is an important and far reaching study of the genetic components of lung cancer," said oncologist Dr. Fadlo Khuri. He's Winship's principal investigator on the project. "We hope to establish a fingerprint for each genetic change, so we can hasten the implementation of personalized medicine for lung cancer."
Hospital official says Winship researchers will work with patients who have been diagnosed with advanced adenocarcinoma of the lung. Adenocarcinoma is cancer of epithelia originating in glandular tissue. Scientists will collect data and tumor tissue from the patients to test for genetic changes.
"The new knowledge obtained in this study will pave the way toward development true personalized medicine for certain types of lung cancers," said Dr. Khuri.
